My mouse is visible and able to move whilst in this screen. I have taken multiple steps to fix this issue all culminating in failure. The first thing I did was restart in safe mode but the issue persisted.

Next I ran the boot repair tool in the advanced options and it failed. At this point I tried to use the advanced option to restore a previous version of Windows but the restore failed as well. I installed Windows 10 a few months back when the free upgrades went out. While I’ve had several issues with the upgrade including my comp locking up randomly which only a hard restart would fix and the computer starting up with just a black screen. This time, I shut down my computer when I was leaving my house for the night and when I returned the next morning my computer was still on, apparently it had never shut down.

The lights on the keyboard and mouse were still on and everything. This has happened before, but upon restarting it boots up to a command prompt that says “Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to unlock”. I press Crtl-Alt-Del and it changes to “Select a user” but no users are listed nor can I type anything into the command prompt. After further investigating I discovered that it doesn’t matter what I type in at the “Press Crtl-Alt-Del to unlock” screen because any key I hit takes me to the “Select a user” screen and as I hit other keys it just cycles back and forth between these to prompts.

I have not changed anything hardware wise since the upgrade and I’m pretty sure I haven’t installed any new software aside from some new games. I’ve tried starting in safe mode and it takes me to that prompt. I checked the Boot Priority in the Bios, nothing was changed.

I tried optimizing Bios settings and that didn’t work. I also tried resetting the CMOS to see if that might help and nothing. I use this computer for work, it’s how I make a living. If I had known that upgrading was going to cause such problems I would have never done it. I have to say that I am very unimpressed by Windows 10 and wish I had never upgraded at all, though it looks like Microsoft is going to be forcing everyone to upgrade soon enough so I won’t be the only one experiencing these nightmarish issues.
